UK startup raises £3.4m to grow sustainable rubber from dandelions

UKI2S, managed by Future Planet Capital, and Sustainable Ventures back the engineering biology platform behind dandelion rubber.

QuberTech has secured £3.4 million, about $4.3 million, in combined grant funding and equity investment from UKI2S, managed by Future Planet Capital, and Sustainable Ventures. The money accelerates development of the company's engineering biology platform and scales its commercial operations.

The platform is built on specially engineered dandelions that produce natural rubber in their roots, alongside other bio-based products. It is a direct answer to a supply chain that currently depends on tropical rubber trees, and with them on climate pressure, disease, geopolitical risk and a tightening set of environmental regulations.

The commercial argument is a plain one. Dandelions mature quickly, they need no tropical climate, and they can be grown in controlled, localised environments close to the industries that consume the material. That turns a crop with a multi-year lead time and a fixed geography into one that can be sited, scheduled and specified.

Beyond rubber, the same roots yield further high-value compounds with applications in cosmetics, sustainable packaging and advanced biomaterials, which is what makes the economics of a harvest work rather than simply the rubber itself.

The round follows public support through Defra's Farming Innovation Programme in partnership with Innovate UK, and sits alongside the research base at Norwich Research Park where the company is built.
